Carla Salem

Based in Lebanon

Carla Salem was born in Lebanon, in 1978, where she currently lives and works. She is a Lebanese visual artist whose work encompasses papermaking, printmaking, calligraphy, sculpture, and installations. Salem's art explores the interplay between materials and languages, particularly focusing on Arabic and Japanese scripts.

She pursued advanced studies in Japan, earning both a Master's and a Ph.D. in Design from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Her dedication to her craft has been recognized with accolades such as the Boghossian Foundation Prize in 2014.

Her works have been showcased in various exhibitions, including collaborations with the Saleh Barakat Gallery in Beirut. Salem continues to contribute to the art world through her innovative approaches to traditional mediums.

Salem's interest in the 2025 Amalia Gardens Residency lies in Andros' marble quarries, cobblestone streets and stoneworks, which mirrors the artist's own preoccupation with material storytelling, but also in the local people and crafts.
