Mark Hadjipateras was born in London, in 1953. He currently divides his time between New York and Athens. A Greek-American visual artist known for his work in painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking, he continues to contribute to the contemporary art scene with his multifaceted and thought-provoking works.
He studied at Hammersmith School of Art, Saint Martins School of Art in London, and earned his BA in Fine Arts from Liverpool Polytechnic (now John Moores University) in 1980. ?Between 1982 and 2002, Hadjipateras lived and worked in New York City, where he engaged in numerous site-specific installations in galleries and public spaces across Europe and the U.S.
Hadjipateras has held over thirty solo exhibitions and participated in more than 100 group shows internationally, including venues such as the Queens Museum of Art and Cooper Union in New York, as well as the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki and the Benaki Museum in Athens. His works are part of several esteemed public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Princeton University Art Museum,Zimmerli Art Museum, EMST (-Greek Museum,of Contemporary Art) the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, , Zimmerli Art Museum, Athens Municipality, Basil & Elize Goulandris Museum Dakis Joannou collection, Vorres Museum,The Royal Bank of Scotland, Daewood Sculpture Garden, Geoje, South Korea, Ernst & Young Athens, IDS/American Express, Prudential Insurance Corporation, New York and many others.
In recent years, Hadjipateras has continued to showcase his work globally. In December 2023, Leila Heller Gallery in New York hosted a solo exhibition featuring his paintings and sculptures, highlighting his exploration of color and form influenced by modernist sensibilities.
Hadjipateras's art is characterized by a fusion of organic and geometric forms, often reflecting themes of nature, technology, and the human condition. He therefore anticipates that the 2025 Amalia Gardens Residency, taking place on the island of Andros, will provide an ideal setting for inspired and focused artistic research and creation.
