Stano Buban

Based in Bratislava

Stano Buban was born on May 5, 1961 in Secovce, and now lives and works in Bratislava. He is a visual artist whose practice spans large-scale symbolic figurative paintings, vibrant abstractions inspired by the shadows of windows and blinds, and monochromatic compositions evoking wound-like forms rendered without a brush. Through this diverse body of work, he has developed a distinct visual vocabulary and a deeply personal system of painting.

From 1980 to 1986, Buban studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava at the Department of Monumental Painting (doc. J. Kresil, prof. E. Lehotska). Since 1995 he has been working as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. After the successful completion of the habilitation process at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, he was appointed associate professor in 2002.

Buban has exhibited at many exhibitions both locally and internationally. His artworks are represented in almost all major public and private collections in Slovakia.

He anticipates that the 2025 Amalia Gardens Residency will offer him a rare space to reflect, reset, and potentially shift his symbolic language in new directions. He is particularly drawn to the solitude and immediacy of the place and hopes that new forms or gestures will emerge without premeditation.
